Summer in southern Spain is just as you imagine: outdoor living, leisurely lunches at beachside chiringuitos, long afternoons enjoying the breeze, dancing until dawn at open-air clubs, or simply sipping a drink while gazing at the stars.

You can be as active or as laid-back as you like.

Let us show you some of the highlights of this wonderful season and why life here is so delightful.

Food and Drinks in the South Paella Sotogrande

Spain, like all Mediterranean countries, is known for its excellent produce, especially in summer. Spanish shops still respect the seasonality of fruit and vegetables, so now is the time for melons, watermelons, peaches, nectarines, apricots, figs, tomatoes, and aubergines.

When in Andalusia, be sure to try gazpacho, a refreshing cold tomato-based soup served in a glass or bowl with chopped garnish on the side. Today, you’ll also find variations like beetroot, strawberry, melon or courgette gazpacho. Even when not hungry, it’s an ideal way to refresh and refuel. Naturally, everyone here insists their mother’s version is the best…

Chiringuitos and Beach Clubs in Sotogrande

Chiringuitos usually offer a full kitchen service all day long. No beach meal is complete without “espetos” – fresh fish, octopus or squid grilled over flames on an old fishing boat set in the sand. The dishes are shared in the centre of the table. For non-seafood lovers, meat options are always available.

Forget sangría – here, the summer drink is “tinto de verano”, a classic mix of red wine and fizzy or still lemonade. Not too sweet and perfect to quench your thirst.

San Juan Night

Noche San Juan Sotogrande

San Juan Night is one of the most magical celebrations on the summer calendar. Held on the eve of 24 June, the night of 23 June, it coincides with the summer solstice and symbolises renewal and purification.

In Torreguadiaro, as in many Andalusian beaches, large bonfires are lit on the sand at nightfall. Locals and visitors gather around the flames to celebrate with music, food, and traditional rituals. The most common custom is to jump the bonfires three times to leave behind negativity and attract good luck for the year ahead. Writing wishes on paper and burning or casting them into the sea is also popular.

At midnight, many people approach the water to wet their feet or take a dip, fulfilling the symbolic purification rite. The beach glows with light, music, and a festive yet ancient atmosphere blending pagan tradition with local celebration.

Virgen del Carmen

Virgen del Carmen Puerto Sotogrande

The feast of the Virgen del Carmen is celebrated on 16 July and is one of the most heartfelt traditions of the Andalusian summer, particularly in southern coastal towns. She is the patron saint of the sea and of sailors, long revered by fishing communities.

On 16 July, towns like Torreguadiaro, La Línea, and Algeciras honour her with land and sea processions. Streets are adorned, processional music plays, and at the port, the Virgin is placed on a richly decorated boat. She is then accompanied by a flotilla of fishing and leisure boats, with crowds following from the shore, offering prayers, songs, and fireworks.

This deeply symbolic event asks for her protection over those who go to sea and a blessing on the waters. For a few hours, the sea becomes a floating temple uniting tradition, spirituality, and community in a single heartfelt tribute.

Boombastic Festival

Held in Estepona from 24 to 26 July 2025, Boombastic is a festival of urban, electronic, and Latin pop music at the Estepona Fairgrounds. Over three days, enjoy reggaeton, trap, EDM, and urban rhythms. The 2025 line-up includes stars like Melendi, Steve Aoki, María Becerra, Khea, and L-Gante.
